OK lets look at weapon smithing, to actually become a master weaponsmith, and by that i mean create all types of weapons you will need smelting, weapon smithing, Enchanting, all mastered.

That will not leave you enough points as I can see it to get close to being self sufficiesnt as you still need a reasonable level in all other skills,

even then say you dabble in tinkering for tools and molds, dable in woodworking for hafts.

you will still as a character need other gear, hence a market will evolve, you cant learn all tradeskills sooner or later you will need bags, rings, armour, etc.

Ok, let's look at this from the proper perspective. It's a game. We try to RP and add a realalistic flavor to our world, but in the end, it's still a game. With Hunar I went to the trainer and trained smelting, armor, weapons and carpentry. I then went to the merchant and bought the tools I needed. I mined, then smelted, then made a few daggers and a few shields.. Repeated and made some armor, a helmet, a greataxe.. All copper and bronze, but I was able to make it. Took about 4 hours total to do all that. A game day lasts, what, 90 min? So lets say I worked for two and a half days.. I can guarantee IRL it would take a hell of a lot longer than that to make even a decent arrowhead, let alone a suit of armor, no matter the material you are using. What I am getting at hear is how real do we want this to be? Do we want to make everyone pound out horeshoes for a few months before they aquire enough skill to make a simple hammer? Then make hammers for a year so you can then try your hand at blades?

To learn how to make armor and weapons, master quality, would take years. I bet, though, that I could make a axe haft at the quality needed for a masterwork greataxe head in a few months, using the most basic of tools.

All that aside, I see the points you are all trying to make. You all have valid arguments as well. The builders will do their best to try and balance the trades yet keep it fun enough to hold everyones interest. Consider this time testing. If we find one thing is too easy while another is too hard we will try to balance that out.

To me, from a in-game player's point of view, I say leave enough attainable experience points to be able to master 2 trades and dabble in a few others. If you want to try your hand at another trade you need only make another character.

as a trade thats really hard, I think enchanting qualifies ;P

Since cnr started, i've been trying to make an enchanted small copper shield.

I bought 10 shields from Gunar.

So far, I've had to try everything else myself. I'm a level 2 baker, a level 4 tailor, and I've yet to even attempt enchanting a single small copper shield! I'll probably be a level 2 gemcrafter before I actually make my first attempt at the shield ;P, and at the moment what appears to be a problem with gemcutting has put a halt to me progressing at all. In the meantime, Ive watched people progress relativley quickly with smithing / weapon & armor crafting.

grumble grumble  _I_ wanna wave around a nice new piece of equipment. hmpf.

Hmm.. and, uhm, as soon as I do enchant a shield, supposing it gets 5% electrical resist, say, will it get taken away when I go into Das? *cries*
