The problems with Dasaria (the view from outside)

Post by Alex Mars »

Dasaria is basically not a server that welcomes newcomers. This may or may not suit the needs of the community, I'm not sure.

The server seems to only cater to the older, high level characters. If you are new, the political bickering is incomprehensible. If you are new and not high level (my highest level character is 9th and almost everyone I see is purple to me) you are left to solo around and have little interaction.

It is impossible to find a group. Due to the login/play server split you cannot search for players online while logging in. Due to the unwillingness of the DMs to ban idiots (and the unwillingness of thin-skinned players to disable receiving Shouts) it is impossible to Shout out that you are looking for a group. The only gatherings of players seen in town are usually too high level to group with if you don't want the label "exp whore".

I have travelled most of the land (pre-recent changes), fought Varanites and bandits, delved in a few dungeons that I could manage to survive, but almost never seen anyone to group with. I only see groups of high levels chatting or the occasional group of powerlevelling children that I prefer not to group with (I like a steady mix of RP and adventuring and don't care for teen trashtalk or endless "I'm the coolest because of my gear" blather).

The item wipe was considered neccessary by some, but I see lots of people with nice gear already while I am still trying to find out where I can get a +1 sword to replace the one I scraped and saved to buy back in the day. I never realized that a +1 sword is a high powered item for a 9th level character. My other characters are still naked and wearing only their prison rags so unless I am willing to go out begging (something I find very distasteful) the characters are dead in the water as it was apparently not deemed neccessary to make any provisions to re-equip characters with even basic starting gear (as near as I can tell most low level characters are alts of high levels so I guess gear is being twinked down to them, I suppose I should just go that route).

I've met some good people in Dasaria who stopped and spent some time helping me with a quest or whatever but as usual they are very high level and I end back as a solo when they move on and get back to what they were doing. I've done the drive-by healer routine and tried to help people out when they were in trouble, but these are usually low levels who cannot group with me.

Maybe Dasaria is only aimed at the established, high level crowd that has been here a while, I'm not sure. If that was the intent then this post is a waste of time, I guess.

I have to disagree with a lot of what you said from my experience here.

I am a relativly new player and within an hour of logging on I had recieved more than my fair share of help from other players.

One even went well out of his way to find me a great axe, as I roleplayed with people and remained persistant and consistant I found my self getting invited on more and more parties and adventures.

Now I am level 10 and I have nice armour (gift) a nice axe (gift) helm (gift) and a few other trinkets, ive explored a fair few areas and gotten to know a LOT of characters.

In general I find this server to be very newbie friendly atleast in my case.

Just remain consistant and get involved, dont wait for an invite into a conversation, join in, ask questions, speak and ye shall be listened to.

Now this I don't get.

Kyril Moon a rogue just made his 11th lv. he spends more time hanging out on popers rock or sitting somewhere close by and almost never does anyone come up and ask him if he wants to party up.

to bad to cus he knows where to take fellow dasarians of a simular or lower lv to get some +1 items ya might be needing.

he might even have some extra gear he don't need and is waiting to pass out to needy party members.

he's been known to escort miners to the v caves who might not be able to make it by themselves not for the exp boost but becouse he was asked where a certin mineral or ore was the crafter needed stricktly RP.

anyway anyone in the 11th lv vacenity or lower if ya have a good RP reason and wana party up don't be afraid to ask.

Funny...six months ago, Alex, when I was new, I said the same thing.

I'm on the flip-side of that coin now...

You must understand that, even tho our characters are abstracts, the relationships between players are real ones...and they take time to nurture, as much as with a character's credability and consistancy.

I hope it doesn't discourage you to have to be patient, but attempt to do so. Dasaria is still under construction, and I have to say that I think this is the most exciting time I have seen here since I joined 8 months ago.

Gear? Give it time...I know I certainly don't want the return of the days of +3 weapons and +4 protection rings found in Peribo's shoppe. Everybody had all the same things. I think every high level character had Taralash. Some characters had several at a time. Ridiculous.

As far as not catering to newer players go, I think this is possibly a fair assessment, and unfortunately not really much can be done about it, until a DM gets to know the player, and the character, and until the player gets to know the DM, and his character gets accustomed to the world. Until these things happen, you are a tourist here.

Write stories! Submit Idea's to Greenman and other DM's. Make yourself a hero, or villain...heh...but most of all....have patience. It will pay off! At least, it did for me.

Good luck to you!

Hey Alex :)

Let me ask, what time zone are you in? Your expierence will vary a lot based on your timezone: US, Europe, or Australia.

Something I find myself doing is loggin on, checking who's online, and then picking an appropriate character from my collection - so I realize where you're coming from.

I'm a US player, and youre looking for someone to group with - so am I. I generally get home between 5-6 Central - if you're on at the same time send me a TELL anytime, or just ask around town, I'll almost always agree to join.

Unfortunately being an idiot isnt against the server rules. Id love to boot some people, and some people make me so frustrated that I ask them to log off. We dont weild the ban stick lightly-- as someone who has the desire to be a part of the dasaria community is usually someone that I would like to see stick around.

I think the most important thing for a new player is to go get involved, be active in the forums and in-game,be fun and positive in your interactions with people. If you are a drag to hang around with, dont expect people to cater to your wishes and needs-- we are all playing for one reason...entertainment. Its just not fun to play with a "down in the dumps" person or with someone with a bad attitude-- unless of course its a well crafted role. Thats totally a different animal.

Dasaria, just like life is what you make out of it for yourself, and its not so much what the community or DMs give you-- its what you get in return when you give. Dasaria is about energy exchange-- like a performance: with energy flowing from audience to performer. The energy has to start somewhere-- let it start with you and see what you get back. The cool thing is....you get to be both audience and performer. Now that...my friend is art. We give you a stage....what you do while you are on it...well thats up to you.

I hope everyone enjoys Dasaria, we cant please everyone and that a fact, though that doesnt stop us from trying.

Yeah id say above all persistance is the key.

When i first came to Dasaria i had never roleplayed at all. What i found, is that if you take the initiative talk to people, you will go much further.

read as much background info as you can on the forums. i was reading the forums around here for a couple of months before i ever signed up.

at first dont try to play too many characters... play just one, this allows you to get a better view of the other characters and players on the server. after you get that base it is a lot easier to know who you want to play with in the future.

also i think this si something even the high levelers need to remember...
if the lower season person is obviously helping taking an active role in what is occuring, and obviously trying to help out, a dm wont up and punish you at least not right away

remember your level is not your character... you are your character

take your time and figure out the type of character you want to play and play him well... that is what will get you respect from people and in turn lead to more fun for everyone

lucky for me that rule never got past the draft stage...

Loki 'loser of village idiot award due to being overqualified'

heh to some extent i'd agree with yer Alex - but for the fact that when no one seems to be roleplaying with me.. well its because i'm not trying.. the more yer put in the more you get out.. Loki and Judas ain't much over 9th.. (Judas is a bit higher.. low down cheating skunk has been playing when i've not been about.. so he's harder than me now.. curse 'im) and we've always about to insult people pick their pockets.. take them to dangerous places and run away.. basically cause as much trouble as possible.. we'd be glad to party with yer.. 'less yer afraid...
