Looking for a small house
I'd like to purchase a small house somewhere in the vicinity of Daris, what should I expect to pay?

OOC: GP 1M was in the old days of economy bloat though, I think that amount of money would be un-heard of these days...
BTW, question to the DM's - what of the existing unused houses? There are quite a few around whose owners have deserted these lands... In one of the topics it says that if they are unnocupied for over a month they may be reclaimed... Is this still being enforced?

What is wrong with sleeping under the stars in a field of grass? Or upon a comfortable rock? You city folk are too plush and prissy to live life the way you were ment to. Go inside your caves and hide from the rain, I will stay out here and allow nature to consume me. I love the rain.

Tsk, Druids, eh?

Rain rusts my armour, foolish man, and there are not many books of learning to be found in caves! I am no man of luxury, but a roof and a bed are not too much to hope for, even in these days... Let those of us of a civilised nature not devolve to the level of savages...

Given that this is a small server community, why is housing so prohibitively priced? It's not like there were 1000 players competing for 20 spots. Why place such large barriers up against people wanting to settle in and make a home in Daris?
Is this a status situation where the older players who have houses want to keep that status out of reach of newer players?

Hey Alex -
If it makes you feel any better, I've been playing over a year and I don't have a house. :) In that time, I havn't seen any new houses go up.
Most of the houses are from -way- back when it was a smaller community and the requests were easier to manage. I assume that as more people wanted them, they kept raising the price to limit the number of requests to a bearable number, until it was just flat out too much to keep up with.
Put it another way - if they were available tomorrow, there would be at least 20-30 people who would want one, and that would be 20-30 areas to build. Personally, I'd just as soon have 20-30 new areas to adventure in, but thats just me.

Hi Alex... Now don't go getting all bent out of shape, none of this is a personal attack. I just wanted to address some of your points...
A million GP's was not a prohibitive amount some time ago. When I first started playing I knew several characters who had access to that kind of money. Gold was not as scarce in those days... It's one of the [many] reasons for the inventory wipe of recent days, as it was killing the economy (think of those pre-war German inflation years, when you needed a wheelbarrow-full of currency to buy a loaf of bread).
On a good note, one of the houses has just been put up for sale to the highest bidder. If you don't think you can get the funds together yourself, why nnot club together with a few others? Shared housing can be fun...
No-one has actually stated a current price yet. I (and others) have mentioned previous prices, and possible, reasonable, current prices. None of us are in a position to say how much a house does actually now cost. We're just stating a point of view.Alex Mars wrote:Given that this is a small server community, why is housing so prohibitively priced?

But there are probably several hundred characters. At least. And only a handful of builders. As jhr4n said, the demand for buildings rapidly overtook the ability of the building team to fulfil the demand. I would agree with both jhr4n and Jimmy - I'd rather have more public areas, or at least group areas, than personal housing.Alex Mars wrote:It's not like there were 1000 players competing for 20 spots. No, I don't believe that. It sounds to me like you feel you're being victimised, and that every decision / rule is put in place to upset you personally... I'm sorry if you feel like that, but I really don't beleive that to be the case. The DM's have the interests of new players at the forefront of their minds just as much as those of older players.Alex Mars wrote:Is this a status situation where the older players who have houses want to keep that status out of reach of newer players?

There is only so much that any server can handle as well. If everyone had a home then the lag would be incredible. That would be about 200 new areas created that only about 5 to 10 would be in use by the players. It is more feasible to have an Inn to stay at and a lockable chest to store your possessions in. I have seen such a thing on another server. It allowed persistance storage of any players items and only that player could access it. It was the same chest for everyone. You just had to imagine that it was some sort of magical device. However it too adds to the resource consumption problem.
In the end, the high price of housing is also to cut down on resources. Which I must say has definately improved. More cudo's to our Code Demon.

Ah I think it's going to rain. You all better run for your caves and take shelther. *Smiles*
