I'm curious. For those of us that have recently created characters. What classes are we?
If you're <10th, please vote, saying which class most of your lvls are in (5 or more).
For purposes of this poll:
Fighters will include Fighter, Ranger, Paladin, Barbarian, Dwarven Defender, Weapon Master, Champion of Torm, and Arcane Archer
Clerics will include Clerics, Druids, and Shifters
Wizards will include Wizards, Sorcerers, Pale Masters, and Dragon Disciples
Bards will include Bards, and Harper Scouts
Rogues will include Rogues, Assassins, Shadowdancers
Monks will only include monks.
Other I'm 5th or greater, but not over 5th in any one Mega-Class
So, anyway, if you were a 2nd Fighter, 3rd Ranger, 4th Rogue, you'd vote as a Fighter since you have 2+3=5 lvls of Fighter classes. If you were a 3rd Bard, 3rd Sorc, you'd vote as other, since you don't have 5 lvls in any one Mega-Class.

Well, Mr. Ergg, I do. With all the hubbub lately about mages being THE power class in Dasaria, I wanted to find out if that was having an effect on how people were choosing which class to play. It, in fact, is not. People are not creating mages with wild abandon to the avoidance of all other classes, nor are the upper ranks filling up with mages.
Thanks for your kind missive though. Smooches.

In fact, people aren't saying that casters are the only viable classes available. They are simply saying that for those who choose to play them, the sheer power available at high levels outclasses melee and stealthers. Casters have a number of spells available that can stop a fighter type from dealing damage long enough to mop the floor with him. The mage overpowering will only increase with epic feats since Automatic Still Spell will allow mages to cast while wearing FULL PLATE.
People are still mostly choosing character classes as they always have - picking a concept and growing their character based on it. But the powergamers and anyone who really wants to be a badass later in levels will go heavy caster.

Rekaan,
You're right, I slightly mis-stated the hubbub (I've fixed it now). I just wanted to see if mages being overpowered (which I'm not arguing against) was causing a flood of mages to be created. It doesn't appear to be the case. I'm happy to see that the community isn't letting the quest for power rule all of their decisions.
I'll have to test that full plate thing. It would be useless for my mage anyway, since if she put on full plate, she wouldn't be able to move. I'm surprised that still spell would completely eliminate the arcane failure chance, but I guess it does make some sense.
I actually disagree about epic lvls making the balance problem worse. I think it'll make it better, even without devastating critical. Mages don't get more spells per day after 20th, and I think the feats favor melee as a whole. I guess we'll have to try it to be sure though.

Ya know, it might have made a difference had ya said that in your original post. However, ya didn't.ercoupe44 wrote:Well, Mr. Ergg, I do. Besides my response was humor.
A joke.
Get it?
Sheesh.

It's something I've actually seen tested. Now, you do have to take the feat once per 3 levels of spells - ie. spell levels 1-3 you take Auto Still once. 4-6 you must take it again, and yet once more for 7-9. Once they are auto-stilled, there is no casting penalty for wearing armor. A single level of fighter would then give the ability to wear full plate and carry any normal weapon you care to.
Add to that the benefits of, say, epic mage armor - +20 to ac. That right there combined with premonition will give just about any caster the chance to level a field of fighters.
I have a couple of characters 10th or below, and neither one is an arcane caster. One is straight cleric and the other is rogue. Even with spot bugs and everything else, I still like sneaky bastiches

Heh. Don't have any naturally as a rogue class, and I have yet to find the good gear with spell resistance....
It's still a problem when you have to build a character around the gear you hope to one day acquire. To me, building a character with the expectation of being bolstered by l33t l3wt is a powergaming no-no.

Yeah, Ergg, I knew it was. I tried to reciprocate, but apparently my feeble attempts at humor are better left undone. Sorry if I offended.A joke.

Rekaan,
I don't think Epic mage armor is all that great, you can only cast it once per day, and it doesn't last very long. If you know you're going into a battle, then it's useful, but it's not something you'd keep going all the time. I'm not sure I'd waste a feat to get it.

No you can't. CoTs don't get a free feat at your first lv of CoT. You need 4 levels to get 2 feats from the CoT PrC.Darkovan wrote:or you could of just taken 2 fighter, 1 at 9th, and 1 at 10th, and WooHoo, duel-wield...(and in all armour types, not just light)you can do the same with Champions of Torm.
