I think this is a very interesting question, though it will seem very odd to most Americans.

Here, (imo) we easily wear white cropped socks with sports shoes during the summer and with shorts, etc.

But over there *points far away to my wife* people GASP at the mere thought

It's interesting, over there *points at my wife* I have been wearing white socks all the time and thought nothing of it. Perfectly normal.

But in Holland... no sir. Why is that?

We have a commercial running currently about a girl having a date, and the date is bragging about his scars on his leg and shows it to the girl, exposing *gasp* white socks... and the girl goes off to the bathroom, calling her friend, telling her all the bad things about the boy, how there's only negative things about him and omg he's wearing white socks!! And the other girl goes ewwwww!!

It perfectly shows how we here look upon the phenomenon called white socks...

They are acceptable, though it depends entirely on the footwear.
It also depends on your look. And your profession.

I tend to wear white trainer socks and black, navy blue normal socks.

Though they can look alrite with trousers and black shoes. (Micheal Jackon) *cough* Guilty.

never wear um with shorts tho.

make sure they are long trousers with shoes.
or
baggy jeans with trainer - trainers that are wide, nikey basketball trainers they look cool with.

depends on what type of person ye are, and maybe your age.

What type of shoes do you have on then with what color socks (while sporting shorts)?
Tennies? Sandals (god, i hope in that case,you have NO socks)?

There are certain kinds of loafers that can be worn with shorts and a colored sock, but for the most part, shorts, white crop socks (not long ones that go up your leg (that is EWWWWWWWWW) and tennies....


that's the way to go if you're not a sandal guy/gal.
